Electronics Mart India Limited (EMIL), the Hyderabad-based electronics and consumer durables retailer, plans to enter West Bengal in FY2026–27, beginning with Kolkata. The move is part of a plan to open 25–30 stores across existing and new markets. The company sees potential for around 30 stores in Kolkata over the next two years, subject to property availability, market potential and capital-allocation priorities.
EMIL trades under the Bajaj Electronics name, which it calls a household name in electronics retail. The brand dates to 1980, when the first store opened at Lakdi-ka-Pul, Hyderabad. The company describes itself as India’s fourth-largest consumer durable and electronics retailer. It ended FY2026 with 215 multi-brand outlets and eight exclusive brand outlets. First-quarter FY27 revenue rose 39% year-on-year to Rs 2,419 crore, with same-store sales growth of 34.2%. That track record could help EMIL establish credibility with Kolkata shoppers and brand partners. The company itself notes that newer markets still need initial investment in awareness and customer relationships.
For leasing agencies and developers, the signals are specific. Vishal Pundir, VP, Strategy & Operations, said EMIL does not want “high rentals to compromise the long-term economics of a store.” Locations that its warehouses, distribution network and existing store ecosystem can support efficiently become more attractive, he said, because that improves replenishment, inventory availability and logistics costs.
EMIL’s site criteria include visibility, accessibility, parking, frontage, floor space and delivery access. Its average fit-out cost is about Rs 2,500 per sq. ft., or roughly Rs 2.5 crore for a 10,000-sq.-ft. store, excluding inventory.
For Kolkata’s leasing market, the opportunity lies in well-located, realistically priced, logistics-friendly properties.
