Amazon India’s first fulfillment centre in West Bengal to cater to the entire Eastern region. The fulfillment centre, or warehouse, spread over 83,000 square feet, at Srirampore in Bengal’s Hooghly district, has a storage capacity of over two lakh cubic feet.

The e-commerce company said the new fulfilment centre will ensure faster product delivery to sellers and consumers in the region. Over 100 sellers from across the country have already registered at the facility, it said. With the new warehouse in the West Bengal, Amazon.in now has as many as 21 Fulfilment Centres across India.

The new centre comes weeks after Amazon extended its payment and logistics solutions to other e-commerce firms. Amazon’s logistics solutions, includes handling products on behalf of sellers and ensuring it reaches the consumer, from its own warehouses.

The expansion in West Bengal is a part of the company’s plans announced in July to add 10 new Fulfilment Centres and expand 7 existing sites, across India. “The new facility will allow us to offer Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) service to thousands of small and medium entrepreneurs in the region and help them gain access to customers across the country,” Amazon India director operations Akhil Saxena said.

By opting for the FBA service, a seller can story his products in Amazon’s warehouse and the company packs and delivers the orders to customers.

“Through the FBA service we give more selections (products) to the customers. The FBA model helps sellers to reduce the price by improving efficiency. And customers get faster delivery of products,” a senior company official said.

The online retailer said the warehouse facility would enable local small and medium enterprises to leverage its platform and nationwide delivery system. The fulfilment centres are operational in ten states with a total storage capacity of over five million cubic feet.
