Shark Tank India is an Indian Hindi-language business reality television series that airs on Sony Entertainment Television. The show is the Indian franchise of the American show Shark Tank. It shows entrepreneurs making business presentations to a panel of investors or sharks, who decide whether to invest in their company.

RARE PLANET – AN INDIAN HANDICRAFTED COMPANY HAS RAISED INR 65 LAKHS FROM SHARK TANK INDIA

Rare Planet was started in 2015 by co-founder Ranodeep Saha and Vijay Kumar joined him in 2019. They sell handmade kulhads, bowls, kettles, copper bottles and mugs, all hand-painted by local artists.

They were already having revenue of Rs.1 crore per month before this pitch with a 12% net profit.

Their handicraft items are available on their online store and some offline shops at airports. They also own a gift shop in Durgapur, West Bengal.

The entrepreneur wanted Rs.65 lakhs funding for 1% shares. Their goal is to open more stores in airports, start retail in shopping mall shops and expand their product line.

Shark Namita Thappar was a fan of their business before because she had visited their store a few days ago. She immediately offered a deal for a 5% stake. She closed the deal for Rs.65 lakhs for 3% equity.

Rare Planet has done business of one crore before coming to Shark Tank. It is currently working with 2,500 local artisans in 5 states. It makes the product available in more than 60 stores including Crossword, Starmark, WH Smith, and Sapna Books. It is also available on the online platform Flipkart, Amazon, and MensXp with its website.

They raised more funds from start-up incubators like Venture Catalysts. In August 2020, they partnered with TATA premium Tea in a marketing campaign ‘#DeshKaKulhad’ to support India’s craftsmen. They also have begun retailing handicraft jewellery ‘SITARA’ at their airports. 

ATYPICAL ADVANTAGE TOOK AWAY SHARK TANK JUDGES AND INDIA BY STORM

Atypical advantage is India’s biggest inclusive platform that provides employment to disabled people. They started the company in 2020. They partnered with more than 100 companies, and more than 100 NGOs are working with them. They have generated more than 1000 job opportunities for disabled people.

Vineet Saraiwala, who lives with a visual impairment hails from Jamshedpur, runs Atypical Advantage, which claims to be India’s largest inclusive employment platform for people with disabilities across India. He says that people with disabilities are often looked upon with a sympathetic lens, but their abilities are questioned. So, when he made it to season 2 of Shark Tank India, this was the narrative he wished to change.

Started in 2020, the company has generated livelihood for more than 1,000 persons with disabilities across several sectors including singing, painting, freelancing, he notes. It is shaping up into a Naukri.com for persons with disabilities.

At Shak Tank, Vineet’s ask was Rs 30 lakh for one per cent equity at a valuation of Rs 30 crore. In the end, Saraiwala took Thapar’s and Aman Gupta’s (Co-founder and CMO of boAt) deal of Rs 30 lakh investment for 3 per cent equity at a valuation of Rs 10 crore. 

On July 22 the revenue was 6.5 lakhs and on August 22 the revenue was 10 lacs. They work on a subscription method and for a few companies they work on a placement fee for a few companies. Previously they had raised 1 crore at the valuation of 7 crores on 3rd December. During March they will reach 2.4 crore AR. He has 14 Angel investors with 15% equity.

Atypical Advantage aspires to help every person with disabilities out there and encourage them in every endeavor they make. They plan on generating livelihood at scale and getting people with disabilities employment opportunities that align with their skills.
